I AM strongly convinced we should keep our beloved pounds and pence, but can offer my sympathies to businesses that trade abroad. It must be a nightmare having to convert into and out of euros and I can see how a common monetary policy across Euroland would benefit everyone – but I don’t want to lose my pound.
However, in a flash of genius I have thought of a brilliant compromise. Since there is hardly any difference between the pound and the Euro at present, why not simply say, OK then, we are now in Euroland and we will adopt the euro – except that our euro is a pound coin and our pence are cents?
We will accept dual currency in our tills and they must do likewise when we travel. A lot of high street shops already accept the euro and prices are usually marked up in both currencies so why not just say: “We’re in”.
Is this too simplistic, or will it work?
