ONCE again, those who in our ignorance do not wish to be governed by the undemocratic, unaccountable European Union are given a lecture by Bill Morehead on its history and value (HAS, June 22).
Unfortunately for him, most British and many European people are becoming all too aware of the deceits which are now part of the EU’s history.
Mr Morehead reminds me of a reversed version of the little boy who could not see the Emperor’s clothes. His rosy vision of the EU proclaims only its majestic virtues, while the unenlightened see its naked ambition to dominate, and its penchant for enforcing controlling legislation on its states.
Whether “we should be pleased that the UK is a valued contributor to the EU” depends on Britons accepting such an insignificant role in affairs, while allowing other countries to prosper at our expense.
There is also increasing evidence that certain countries would deliberately promote their own agendas while we submit to their underhand sabotage.
Witness France’s willingness to use protectionism to promote its own interests while President Nicolas Sarkozy now rewrites history by snubbing the Queen at the D-Day anniversary and omits Britain’s part in war. This is not the Common Market originally proposed.
