RE Hugh Pender’s disapproval of the Queen’s Birthday Honours (HAS, June 20).

In my view, they are usually awarded to “working class”

people who have given a lifetime of service to the community and deserving causes, and who never expect any personal reward save that of their “duty of care” or love of their country.

When they are informed of their award they are the most surprised and delighted of anyone – and why not? Salt of the earth, I say.

I always read Mr Pender’s comments in HAS and while he has every right to make them, I more often than not disagree with them – that is my prerogative – but this letter, if not offensive, is very unkind indeed because the recipients receive no financial reward, only the appreciation of their friends.
