I AM a history student at university in the US working on a research project about British country houses during the Second World War and am interested in learning about the experiences of people who lived, worked and were stationed in them during that period.
Also, I am interested in learning how country houses adapted to their new roles as schools, hospitals, and homes for evacuees, and as military centres.
In particular, I am looking for any information about the Home Guard use of Gibside in the North-East during the war and would like to hear from anyone who has memories of Gibside during the war. Pictures would also be appreciated and will be returned. Please contact me via email at jmanckiy@cox.net or at the address below.
