WHEN I first heard of the UK Independence Party it was at the 1999 Euro elections. Many observers commented that when Ukip said “Save our Pound” it was really code for “Britain for the British”.
Ten years on, and this timid slogan has progressed to bolder and disgusting slogans used on billboards and leaflets aimed at immigrants and asylum-seekers.
I was concerned to see the combined votes of the “send them back” parties in the North- East was only a handful of votes away from beating Labour for top spot. Despite people saying they would never vote for the BNP, they have in my opinion just sleepwalked into doing that by voting Ukip.
Apart from the fact that one has a better image and is loved by the media, I cannot see much difference. At least the BNP is the devil that we know.
I am also opposed to the European Union, but I sent my message of disapproval in a vote for No2EU-Yes to democracy.
Unlike Ukip and the BNP, it is a non-chauvinistic party which is supported by many in the trade union movement.
I ask those who voted Ukip and BNP to search their consciences and consider voting No2EU next time.
