I CAN’T agree with your report (Echo, June 12) that there were transport “headaches” around the Take That and Oasis concerts at Sunderland’s Stadium of Light – at least no more than you have to expect at concerts of this size and scale.
Nexus, which owns, manages and is modernising Metro, moved around 15,000 fans a night after the shows on Metro and Park-and-Ride. Yes, there were queues – but no more so than you would see at other big venues such as Wembley or Old Trafford when more than 50,000 music fans all head for the exits in one go, last thing at night.
We worked hard with Sunderland City Council, Northumbria Police, the promoters and Sunderland Football Club to put on a good show in every respect – and we were rewarded with very few complaints among the huge numbers attending, and the odd email and letter of praise as well.
Metro is a crucial part of the North-East’s bids to stage major music and sporting events, including World Cup games, at the Stadium of Light and St James’ Park in future, and we showed over recent days that we can deliver.
