IN complete contrast to what many of our lords, politicians, bankers and their like have been taking from us, we travelled with the brave survivors of the D-Day landings to the beaches and villages they helped liberate 65 years ago to honour the great cost they paid.
At least 82-plus years of age, just getting there would be another major task for many.
But they turned out immaculately with their proud array of decorations, flags and service bands as they paraded, prayed and renewed contact with old comrades alongside world leaders and French villagers to honour the men who fell beside them to win back lost freedom for Europe.
More than 4,000 Allied seamen, soldiers and airmen gave their lives and there were many service and civilian casualties in that one important day.
All these veterans asked for was to be back there with their old pals who died young. We will remember them.
