I AGREE entirely with the letter from Emma Fielding, of Newton Aycliffe, which protested at the practice of closing schools so they can be used as polling stations (HAS, June 6).
There are plenty of other buildings that could be utilised; consider village halls, church halls, disused post offices and shops, disused pubs and clubs, cricket pavilions, retirement homes. Where there’s a will, there’s a way.
I’m copying this letter to the Democratic Services Department at Darlington Borough Council and I’d be happy to sit on a polling stations sub-committee if it would help to make progress.
Councillor Malcolm Dunstone, Liberal Democrat, Darlington Borough Council.
