COULD I ask that the proposed £400m Northshore development for Stockton (Echo, June 5) in some way commemorates the pride we should have in “the event that changed the world” – the Stockton and Darlington Railway.
I write this letter after seeing a report that Locomotion: The National Railway Museum in Shildon, County Durham, recently welcomed its 750,000th visitor since opening nearly five years ago (Echo, June 1).
At that time, I wrote asking why Stockton didn’t take this on board with a potential of thousands of visitors per year.
Shildon originally anticipated 60,000 per year, but look at how this has increased since its opening and think what Stockton, on an easier transport system, could have achieved if there had been the will.
So let’s see some more visible or commemorative mark of this historic railway event.
