ON radio yesterday, I heard some of the best news ever: it appeared Home Secretary Jacqui Smith – above – was going to resign her Cabinet post.
Not before time, but she should have been sacked ages ago because she was about as much good as an ashtray on a motorbike.
Anyway, I would like to make a suggestion. Why don’t we ask Middlesbrough Mayor Ray Mallon to take on the job?
He knows exactly what this country, and its people really need.
Having sorted his home patch out, I know he could do it for our once great country.
So, come on Ray, give it a go. I’ll second you, and I’m sure you will get plenty of backing.
Oh, and don’t worry yourself about a minor thing like being elected first.
After all, Gordon Brown never was.

■ Footnote: It was confirmed last night that Ms Smith will leave the Government in a Whitehall shake-up expected within days.
