THE small-mindedness of some of your correspondents is beyond my powers of comprehension. I refer to the letter from Derek Thornton (HAS, May 29) regarding bus stops recently erected at Tanner’s Hall Cottages, Stockley Lane, Oakenshaw, near Willington, County Durham.
Health and safety of the people we represent is a prime concern for local county councillor Becky Brunskill and myself, who represent Willington and who have worked extremely hard to secure the funding for this particular project.
The work was commissioned following a near accident when a passenger was alighting from the bus to Tow Law and as there was nowhere to wait attempted to cross the road from behind the bus and was nearly run down by a passing speeding car.
The speed of the traffic on this fairly straight piece of road is another problem that we are striving to address. This newly-constructed refuge will enable passengers to alight in safety and wait until the bus pulls away before crossing.
As local councillors we consider this a small price to pay to ensure the safety of the travelling public. I, along with your correspondent, look forward to seeing the pigs flying over Stockley Lane.
Councillor Brian Myers, Chairman, Durham County Council.
