BERWICK Liberal Democrat MP Sir Alan Beith is an outstanding MP with a wealth of experience and common sense.
If, having put his name forward to succeed Michael Martin as Speaker of the House of Commons (Echo, May 20), he is successful, I would ask him to campaign for the following reforms: a reduction of the total number of MPs by a third to 400-plus; an independent review of MPs’ salaries and expenses and to ensure that all expense claims are reasonable; that MPs should not be allowed to carry on directorships and second jobs; that the House of Lords is replaced by an elected senate; and that all elections should be by proportional representation.
Councillor Ben Ord, Chairman, Spennymoor Liberal Democrats.
