THE article about the Darlington CHA and HF Rambling Club (Echo, May 5) brings back memories of a walk I took in 1950, when I was 13.
It was with the Darlington Field Club and was led by my great uncle, Albert Stainthorpe, and Stan Cardwell.
We got the last bus from Darlington to Richmond and walked along the bottom road to Reeth. The return journey was by the higher Moor Road. We stopped at a farm and had hot cocoa.
The purpose of these walks was to hear the dawn chorus, and a record of the order of which bird sang first was sent to The Echo.
I believe the distance was 22 miles and I do not remember any traffic passing us at any time. – John A Barr, Darlington.
