THE impact of the outbreak of swine flu on global travel raises understandable concerns as to how to control the spread of disease. It is now obvious that, while the world might span many continents, to contract infection you don’t have to move out of your town or village.

The situation is regrettable for those who enjoy travel and for countries like Mexico, which has seen a significant tourist interest in recent years, but being responsible does not just rest on governments and the World Health Organisation. We all have to act responsibly.

While the Foreign Office and insurance companies urge against travelling to Mexico, it seems some airlines are not following suit. Package holiday companies seem to have acted with common sense, but some airlines are still making flights, leaving it to the customer.

Undoubtedly, there will be massive savings on a flight and holiday destination. You could probably “pick and mix”, but what is the message here?

Commercial or business opportunity must surely be measured by attention to safety and health care.

Unless everyone acts together to manage and control infection and disease then we will see more casualties of swine flu and perhaps other viruses.
