RE Ralph Musgrave’s letter about speeding (HAS, April 27).

Although I don’t condone speeding, I think there are more accidents caused by incompetent drivers who shouldn’t be let anywhere near a car, never mind on the road, rather than by speeding drivers.

Drivers who don’t stay in the right lane on roads and roundabouts; drivers leaving indicators on when not turning; drivers who don’t use indicators when they should use them; drivers not using sliproads to get up to motorway speed; drivers who drive well below the speed limit; drivers who don’t drive onto the outside lane of dual carriageways to let other cars enter the road from other roads – and why do some drivers travel at 40mph in a 60mph zone and keep driving at 40mph when they enter a 30mph zone?

And, can I ask, do the police catch as many incompetent drivers as they do speeders?

Personally, I doubt it as it is very easy to catch speeding drivers with cameras, especially at places where it is not an accident blackspot, which is one reason why speed cameras were introduced in the first place, wasn’t it?
