I WAS interested to read your story, “Drunken fans made journey a nightmare” (Echo, April 11) – about a woman passenger’s disgust at Sunderland supporters on a Saturday evening train journey from King’s Cross, London, to Darlington – as a similar occurrence happened to me last September.
The “fans” this time were from Newcastle and their behaviour and “songs” were disgusting.
We did not see any train staff between London and Peterborough. When we reached Peterborough we decided enough was enough, so we made our way to find seats elsewhere and ended up in First Class.
Back home I wrote to British Transport Police who apologised for our distress and, after an investigation, I was assured that in the future:
1. A full assessment would be undertaken when they were aware of football supporters;
2. The last train would be “dry”;
3. Supporters would be warned about their behaviour;
4. British Transport Police would be allocated to travel with supporters.
It would appear from your report that these arrangements have not been in place.
