A RECENT visit to the main post office in Darlington left a bad taste in my mouth. To start with, it was packed to the door and there were only five serving places open.

There’s never any ventilation in that place, not even in warm weather. With the ceiling so low, you feel as though you are going to suffocate.

Most of the people in the queue were senior citizens (including myself at 81 years), and a number were not very steady on their feet.

All of a sudden, there was a commotion. An old lady had fainted and fell on the floor. An ambulance was called.

It is a disgrace, the length of time people have to stand and wait – and worse in warm weather. It is absolute cruelty.
