TO my surprise, I find myself largely in agreement with Bill Morehead (HAS, April 2) regarding the disgraceful number of unqualified managers, especially in Britain.

It seems this trend is prevalent at Cabinet level and it also seems to be the case in the EU Commission, where failed Cabinet ministers and politicians of dubious reputation are appointed to cushy jobs by their buddies.

I won’t mention their high salaries, settlement allowances, pensions and redundancy packages – also known as their free ticket to the gravy train.

I also agree with Mr Morehead about how good management uses knowledge that exists in all departments and with his comments about the use of a cooperative approach, with no wide disparity in incomes and other financial benefits.

But try telling that to a Cabinet minister or an EU Commissioner.
