OH dear, life after bmi’s departure from Durham Tees Valley Airport. Leave Darlington at 6.30am. Delay on A1 for loose horses.

Arrive Newcastle airport for chaotic BA “bag drop” (a ten-person queue taking 40 minutes), board plane and taxi to edge of runway.

Wait for almost an hour for RAF to make an emergency landing.

Arrive Heathrow 11am.

After that experience, I decided to try “Plan B”. Booked return train journey to London for this week. Surprise, surprise.

Cheapest standard class ticket “off-peak” – £154. Significantly more expensive than before the flights stopped.

This is proof we desperately need a Durham Tees Valley to London flight – not only for convenience, but also as competition to keep a lid on rail pricing to the capital.
