THE analogy Des More makes between Mr Micawber and the way the present economic situation is being handled by the Government (HAS, Nov 20) does not fit.

The Government acts in a dynamic way in a situation which is expected to improve if economic activity is properly kick-started.

Mr Micawber had a small clerk’s salary. He was a mere employee, and because more children were being born in his household – as there was apparently no birth control – he was constantly moving into insolvency.

He was a plaything of fate at a period of early mercantile capitalism.

By contrast, the Government has the capacity, which it clearly recognises, to be pro-active.

I think Mr More should be prepared to admit that our affairs are better in the hands of Gordon Brown than they would be in the hands of David Cameron.
