DARLINGTON is justifiably proud of its railway heritage but there is one railway relic which for the sake of a few pounds is being left to rust away.

Fixed to the wall on the approach road to Darlington main line station is a North Eastern Railway cast iron trespass notice.

The North Eastern Railway ceased to exist in 1923 so the sign is almost 100 years old, if not older.

At one time such signs were common, but few now remain in position.

The sign at Darlington is covered in rust and has not seen a paint brush for many years.

When Virgin Trains operated the station, I asked in view of its historic interest the sign be painted. I met with no response.

I understand the station is to undergo a multi-million revamp, is it too much to ask that a pound or two be spent on a tin of paint?
