WHILE watching the Great North Run, it occurred to me how true the saying "great oaks from little acorns grow".
What started as a tiny seed of thought in the mind of Brendan Foster has grown into the world's largest half marathon, accommodating everyone from the elite athlete to those who can barely stagger over the finishing line, and all the glorious charity runners.
Everyone of them has a story to tell and a hope in their heart. Some collect for small local organisations and others, like the celebrities, are able to raise large amounts for international organisations.
Countless people must have benefited over the years and the region has been showcased for all the right reasons.
Congratulations Brendan. You are an inspiration to us all.
