IT is the Prime Minister who will decide the date of the General Election.
In doing so, he will have to take soundings of opinion in the country, what funds are available and whether there are members in enough numbers to carry out the mundane tasks they are asked to do in aid of the party.
In fact, we should have an election soon because such questions as the new European treaty will be resolved by Parliament, but should have the input of public opinion, and many members of the public are aware of the changes that have been negotiated between members since the EU has expanded its membership.
I am not convinced that a referendum is the answer, but the electors do have a right to decide now the members they want to represent them.
I would also like to see a vote by the public on the reform of the second chamber to make it a totally elected chamber and if it becomes a pledge to the electors there will be no reason for further procrastination in bringing in the necessary legislation.
Geoffrey Bulmer, Billingham.
