IT is very pleasing to read that health services in the North-East are among the best in the country (Echo, Sept 17).

The annual report of NHS North- East (the new name for the North- East Strategic Health Authority) is a good one and speaks of major successes.

Particularly pleasing is the fact that over a 12-month period all targets to reduce patient waiting times were met or exceeded. There have been other improvements, too, for it is not that long ago when those requiring a heart bypass operation faced a waiting time of 18 months.

Today, the figure is three months.

Taken overall, the report is one of excellent progress.
