CORRESPONDENT N Tate asked if we will ever be fortunate enough to see the likes of Winston Churchill and Margaret Thatcher as leaders again (HAS, Sept 12). I sincerely hope not.

Mrs Thatcher all but destroyed Britain. She took us to an unnecessary war with Argentina; she destroyed the mining industry, which in turn destroyed many communities; she tried to destroy the unions; she brought in the poll tax; she sold off council housing, (which was meant to be social housing for working class people); the list goes on.

Under the Thatcher government, unemployment was at record high, there were riots on streets, and people were getting their houses repossessed at an alarming rate. She destroyed society. Need I say more.

As for Churchill, the word warmonger springs to mind.
