WHAT a quality piece by Mike Amos (Backtrack, Sept 14) about the late, great Ian Porterfield. It was a telling insight into "Porter"

the person with Amos describing the likeable Scot as warm and genuine.

All concerned should be praised for the fitting and well deserved tributes that were paid to Porterfield both before and during the Sunderland v Reading game last Saturday - from the way the club looked after the Porterfield family and the 1973 FA Cupwinning heroes to the way the supporters paid their own tributes to the SAFC legend.

This was particularly evident from the fans during the minute's applause and the spontaneous "Stand up for Ian Porterfield"

chant that rang out in the second half.

The team's performance on the pitch that day was also impressive which I am sure Ian will have approved of while watching with his former manager, Bob Stokoe, from above.
