I HAVE sympathy with the opinions of your anonymous correspondent about British culture (HAS, Sept 1), but he was wrong about one point.
It is rarely English beer the British pour down their necks on a bank holiday, but tasteless and strong lagers. With some exceptions, lager is the drink of the binge drinker, moron and lout.
There are many things about British or English culture we should have pride in. The English landscape, literature, poetry, cheese, and beer. British classical music is just as full of quality and melody as our European rivals.
While we do not have the climate and land for growing wine like some fellow Europeans, the quality of those we do manage to produce is often judged to be of a high quality.
I am not a fan of the British political system that allows one party to form a government on a minority of votes cast. However, the system is still superior to that of a totalitarian country.
People who don't have any knowledge or interest in this island's history claim they are patriotic because they hate the European Union and follow the England football team. Football appears to be the national religion.
