THE news that Sir Norman Wisdom has completed his last screen role (Echo, Aug 27) brings to a close a chapter in film comedy the like of which we are unlikely to see again.
Calling Norman Wisdom a film icon might be gracious to some - he is certainly a great character, a face that conjures many emotions and he leaves a lasting impression, much in the same way as Charlie Chaplin, Laurel and Hardy and others from the silent movie era captured a generation.
As well as his noticeable facial expressions, Norman Wisdom's voice has been an asset in what can best be described as innocent comedy. But innocence does not suggest or dispel his acting skill, even if it did not always meet the acclaim of the critics.
As a comedy actor he sits there with the greats, treading the boards with resilience and a desire to entertain. What a role model for others to follow.
