IMAGINATIVELY conceived and presented in the style of the period, your admirable supplement on the filming of Atonement in Redcar erred in a small but crucial respect.
Reports in the 1940s would have set Redcar firmly in Yorkshire.
Most likely it would have been described as "a North Yorkshire resort".
The North Riding might have been mentioned. The town would certainly not have been placed in "east Cleveland", a term only recently concocted.
Of course, Redcar is still in Yorkshire, the true historic Yorkshire.
And so is Cleveland, east, west or wherever.
