I WAS never destined to become famous.

In 1964 I represented South Yorkshire U15 at rugby union and was reserve for the season. When the winger Jones did not turn up against Derbyshire at Sheffield, I played and scored a try! The Sheffield Star Green 'Un that night said: "Jones went over in the corner to score a good try for Yorkshire."

After a long brewery career of 37 years I took an early retirement.

On a trip to London, my wife and I appeared in the audience of an Ant and Dec TV show. During a song by a group called G4, a spoof on royalty, the camera paused on me for a couple of seconds and flashed up the caption "Steve from Crewe"

- a name that was mentioned in the lyrics.

In the pub the following night I had to explain that I was not really Steve, and did not come from Crewe.

Now I do volunteer work on the WeardaIe Railway. I have qualified as a guard and a shunter driver and my picture appeared in The Northern Echo on August 11.

The photographer asked my name and I said "David Scott". He replied: "Scorton, as in the place?".

I said: "No...Scott...S..C..O..T..T."

Well, you have guessed it! The caption under the photograph in the paper reads: "Brian Cox and David Scorton set off from Stanhope station."

Never mind. I know who I am!

David Scott (alias Jones, alias Steve from Crewe, alias David Scorton), Bishop Auckland.
