FOOTBALLER Jamie Carragher's decision to turn his back on representing his country, after growing tired of being selected for squads but overlooked for matches, is misguided.
There is no doubt Carragher is a fine footballer who has given eminent service to Liverpool. But is he as good in the central defensive position as Rio Ferdinand or John Terry? I think not. Carragher is unfortunate in playing in an era when England have an abundance of quality centre backs.
It is ironic his decision comes when, with present injuries, he could well have had a good run in the England side. What an opportunity to prove his point.
The essential point about Carragher's protest is: who is the most important, him or the England team? The answer, of course, is the team.
There is no way England coach Steve McClaren can guarantee Carragher an automatic place. That would be unfair to all the other players.
I do hope Carragher has a change of heart. That said, it must be on England's terms, not his.
