HAVING just returned from a twomonth tour of Australia, I can say that I do not agree with Prime Minister John Howard's policy on multiculturalism.
This is a nation that until recently had a "whites-only" immigration policy. The government also sees fit to hold families seeking asylum (including children) in prison-style detention centres for years on end.
The present culture that exists today was founded 200 years ago when the land was stolen from the indigenous people of Australia, the Aborigines. These people were persecuted, driven from their homes and even killed. Perhaps this is why we saw little evidence of multiculturalism on our travels.
Australia certainly doesn't have the diverse culture we can appreciate here in the UK.
