FURTHER to my letter (HAS, Aug 7) about this country going to the dogs - as indicated through events at Newcastle Airport and Saturday night anti-social behaviour on the Metro on returning from a holiday in Cyprus - may I add that the contrast on coming back from a relatively poor country was amazing.
The move abroad by so many Britons is not only due to the weather, but to the loss of decency and feeling of being safe - basic things, but so important.
Come on local and national government, it is time for real action, not just talk. Stop the spin and show us that things can change, and quickly. If these countries, with limited resources, can achieve decency, why can't we, with all of our expertise, experience and wealth?
Otherwise, give the country to the riff-raff, louts and drunks and compensate the decent people to go abroad and live with people who care.
John Elliott, Sunderland.
