IN wishing the best for most North- East football teams this season, history is certainly against the "big two" in the Premiership, and things do not augur well for Middlesbrough either.

Taking Newcastle, one has to question the "injury prone" Mark Viduka and Michael Owen's reluctance to verbally commit himself to the cause until it was clear a big club was not forthcoming. Add the lack of money at manager Sam Allardyce's disposal, and the Toon faithful look as though they must again console themselves with the black and white pictures of their last major trophy.

The apparent disillusionment among Middlesbrough fans shown by the depletion of season ticket sales, and the fact their new sponsors are the makers of a satellite navigation system, leaves one wondering if the Boro really will lose their way this season.

Sunderland will find the Premiership difficult to navigate and fans' expectations should not be too high, though Reading proved last season that a promoted team can hold their own against teams outside the top four, and a top-half finish is not beyond them.

The new season will probably bring more downs than ups, but then again, when has it ever been any different?
