TO respond to Councillor Chris McEwan’s letter regarding Darlington town centre (HAS, Sept 4), I feel that it is important to be proud of our town but quoting a 90 per cent occupancy of retail units does not reflect the quality of the shopping.
There are too many charity shops and not enough big name retailers to compliment our independent shops.
How are we to encourage more visitors and retailers to the town when the council supports a bypass between the A1 and A66 which will encourage potential shoppers to ignore Darlington and take their trade to Teesside Park and Middlesbrough?
Come on councillors, support our town centre and do not encourage schemes to bypass Darlington altogether.
J Sturgeon, Darlington
