In 1969, attacks by Loyalist terrorist groups caused the British Army to be sent into Northern Ireland to defend Catholics.
The Ulster Unionist Party (UUP) and the DUP began using British troops to attack the very people the army were sent to protect.
This led in January 1970 to the reactivation of the IRA as Provisional IRA.
Until the creation of the Progressive Unionist Party, Loyalist terrorist groups were politically represented by the DUP and UUP.
The same DUP which the Conservatives have gone into coalition with to keep themselves in power.
