YOUR edition of Wednesday, May 31 featured a letter from D Metcalfe of Newton Aycliffe about items of household waste being left in an area where children play.

I’d like to take the opportunity, through your pages, to provide an update on this matter.

We had not received any reports about the waste prior to the letter being published and it had not been found in the weekly litter picks we carry out on housing estates.

Following the publication of the letter and confirmation of the location, our clean and green team visited the site on Thursday, June 1, and removed a fridge.

I’d like to take this opportunity to remind everyone that household waste can be taken to one of our recycling centres free of charge and that they can arrange for us to come out and collect items for a small fee. More information is available at www.durham.gov.uk/recycling.

We’d also encourage people to report fly-tipping to us at www.durham.gov.uk/flytipping.
