A LADY from Darlington rang BBC Radio 4 Any Answers on Saturday to complain that Scots would get the Winter Fuel allowance but not herself.
It is worse than that. Even colder places north of Darlington, like Newcastle, which is said to be one of the coldest cities in the UK, will not get allowance while towns south of Newcastle in Scotland will benefit.
Look at an atlas – Stranraer, the most south-westerly Scottish town, is actually further south than Newcastle.
Up the coast, Berwick-on-Tweed experiences even colder east winds off the North Sea and is on the same latitude as Glasgow suburbs!
Coldness is no respecter of artificial borders between England and Scotland.
