TONY Blair and his power-hungry successor, Gordon Brown, keep claiming that environmentally friendly sources of power must be found to replace the present methods of power production which they claim damage the atmosphere.
Wind farms and nuclear power stations have been suggested, but who wants the country covered with huge wind turbines which produce very little power?
A tidal barrage could be built across the Severn estuary and be capable of producing five per cent of the national requirement for electricity, but already some MPs are claiming it would be too expensive to build at something like £20bn.
These same MPs are quite willing to spend that amount of money on a status symbol such as a nuclear submarine weapon system complete with missiles which could destroy the world. What strange fellows we have running the country.
If our present politicians want to continue chasing their vision as world leaders, wouldn't it be much more prudent to save the world first so that they had something to be world leaders of?
P Dolan, Newton Aycliffe.
