THE unveiling of the statue of Brian Clough, in Middlesbrough, (Echo, May 17) reveals a legend with a legacy. A man of principle and courage off and on the football pitch, his achievements as a player could have been greater had injury not cut short a career that would have undoubtedly led to many goals at international level. As a manager, his successes at Derby and Nottingham Forest were built on hard work and the concept of teamwork. He encouraged and developed talented players but was intolerant of players with a "prima donna" attitude.
Brian Clough's legacy is evident among those who played for him - Roy Keane and Brian Laws are two managers who come to mind, having the vision and tenacity, as well as a realistic belief in what is possible.
Many believe Brian Clough would have been a great England manager and I would have loved to see him in that post.
The failure of the FA to recognise his qualities was a loss to English football. But no doubt the man himself would comment that nothing much changes in football.
