AS news of another British soldier's death in Iraq brings the number of fatalities to 147, it is time to review our position militarily.
We all know that our troops sign up and, come what may, they answer their command. But never forget their courage and, of course, this is a conflict that has been particularly difficult. Toppling Saddam Hussein was one thing, but bringing democracy and stability to a country that has so much unrest and division is another. As we know, our troops are a constant target from warring factions, some would say "sitting targets".
As Tony Blair's reign as Prime Minister comes to an end, it should be a time of reflection by his successor, which is looking like Gordon Brown.
Iraq has been an Achilles heel for Labour, but a change in leadership could now provide the opportunity to honour the heroes and bring about withdrawal at the earliest opportunity.
In doing so, he might not only make his political mark, but actually respond to the wishes of the country.
