I HAVE followed with interest the numerous letters on these pages recently regarding the unfolding refugee crisis.
The UK has a long, proud history of helping refugees. We know too well the human cost of closing our doors and hearts to refugees.
Of course, a distinction must be made between refugees and economic migrants. We simply cannot accommodate all who wish to settle here, as much as we may empathise with their striving for a better life.
However, I believe the UK is right to take refugees from camps around Syria. I also believe Teesside’s councils are right to play their part. We need assurances that infrastructure improvements will be put in place before any refugee families are welcomed into our communities, for the sake of both the refugees and those who already live here.
