IF THERE is a second global recession – as David Cameron fears – then will that, too, be blamed, at least domestically, on the British government and its millions of employees?
If not, why not?
Until the crash in 2008, the British economy was so successful, and the public sector was so essential to that success, that the Conservatives were committed to matching Labour’s departmental spending plans pound for pound.
Essentially, the Conservatives were committed to matching Gordon Brown’s and Alistair Darling’s departmental spending plans exactly.
Even on the day of the 2010 General Election, with Brown and Darling in charge, and Ed Miliband and Ed Balls in close attendance, there was no recession in the United Kingdom, and our country enjoyed a first-class AAA credit rating.
Who would believe that that was a mere four and a half years ago?
I almost hope that there is another crash between today and next year’s general election. After all, an incoming Labour government, with its members’ previous record, would quickly sort out the consequences for the UK.
