PETER Mullen’s views on the latest garbage that the Prime Minister spouts is an example of what is truth and good common sense (Echo, Nov 11).
I suggest Rob Merrick take note when he suggests who would make the best leader to govern the UK.
The next time he writes about this subject Mr Merrick would do better getting some good advice from Peter Mullen.
John Young, Wolsingham.
I AM not surprised that the Rev Peter Mullen has no understanding of the concept of racism but nevertheless his comments on the subject are deeply disappointing (HAS, 11 Nov).
He appeared to argue that the Prime Minister is a racist because he supports the increased representation of ethnic minorities in positions of authority, including the post of Prime Minister. It is a fact that minority ethnic groups are under represented in many leading roles, for example executive positions in business and politics.
The reasons for this are complex but undoubtedly include historic and current issues of prejudicial views held by many people in positions of influence.
The position is changing slowly and quotas are not the answer. However, encouraging black or Asian people to apply for senior positions, and ensuring they have a level playing field so that the best candidate is successful regardless of colour, is both lawful and right.
Rev Mullen sadly regards this as political correctness and social engineering.
His cheap throwaway comment that “millionaire rap artists are doing pretty well” tells us all we need to know about his own personal prejudices.
John Crick, Bishop Auckland.
