HOW I agree with Harry Mead (Echo, July 2). I think that Prince Charles and other supporters of grammar schools should be seeking all round improvement in all schools.
The comprehensive near me has always been devoted to all of its pupils. As a former teacher, I know that the pass mark for grammar or high schools varied each year according to the places available.
In the past, pupils had to pass all subjects to get a place in further education. Now a student is credited with each subject they pass. Some people can be excellent at one group of subjects and not at another group, but passing to get to grammar school did not recognise that. You had to be equally good at maths and English to pass.
Yes, some schools need improvement and that should be the aim.
Has anyone educated at a comprehensive school supported more grammar schools?
