ALTHOUGH the overriding feeling among England’s fans was that they were never going to bring the World Cup home from Brazil, they were naturally disappointed by the team’s early exit.
However, I was astonished by the complacency shown by the players themselves when they were asked for their own thoughts on their performance.
It seemed that, even though they failed to win a single match and scored only two goals, they were satisfied that the positives outweighed the negatives.
After the draw with Costa Rica, manager Roy Hodgson told ITV: “We showed today what a good team we can be. I’m disappointed not to finish with the victory, but I don’t think we could have asked for a much better performance.”
With an attitude like that, we still have a long way to go.
