AFTER reading of another distressing incident of people being injured while walking in fields (Echo, June 20) I would like to pass on my advice.

As a boy, I was evacuated to a farm in South Wales.

While there we all had our daily chores.

Occasionally, I would be asked to go up the lane and bring in a small herd of cows to be milked at the end of the day.

I had a stout stick which I used to guide the cows and if any of them got too close to me I would give it a sharp tap on it’s nose with the stick. This always had the desired effect in changing the direction of the cow toward me. I would recommend anyone intending to walk in a field containing cows to carry a stout stick and remember the nose of a cow is their tender part.
