I LOVE this country but we cannot win a World Cup match, a cricket test match, or the Eurovision Song Contest and struggle to bring the Hillsborough disaster to a close after 25 years.
But I must say that when it comes to organising an event such as Royal Ascot we are the envy of the world.
The royal presence, the pomp and the ceremony, the rich, the famous and the not so famous, it is a magnificent spectacle. To see all of the race-goers make such an effort with their dress is a sight to behold.
The oil-rich sheiks of Dubai sponsor much of the meeting, and also try to win most of the prize money, but I bet a ride in the royal procession is the highlight of their week.
I’d also like to praise the brilliant coverage by Channel 4 which showed every race live and loads of behind the scenes action.
Eric Schofield, Crook.
