I CAN’T understand the suggestion of negative celebration at England’s defeat against Uruguay in many of the less sensational newspapers.

In truth, England were out-done by the one world class player on the field.

Luis Suarez has repeatedly shown in the Premier League that he is capable of scoring goals that win matches between two teams which, apart from himself, are equal. Is it a surprise when he goes and does it again on the international stage?

At least Roy Hodgson tried to select a team versus Italy and Uruguay which attempted to take the game to them. Gone was the plodding, sideways stuff we’ve suffered for the past ten years or so.

On another day, Wayne Rooney’s first half free kick might have gone in. Their goalie hadn’t moved.

On another day, Rooney’s header would have gone in. Didn’t he do well to get there anyway?

On another day, Godin the Uruguay defender and captain should have been sent off for a second bookable offence. What then?

We’ve had population figures quoted relating to how many folk live in England compared to Uruguay and various other opponents in recent years. Perhaps we should look instead at how many English players are playing at the very top level at home or abroad, compared to those of the so-called smaller nations.

Stop importing second rate players from abroad and give our own youngsters a chance.

Would you believe I’m constantly accused by friends and family of having a glass which is half empty? Come on England.

Alan Jackson, Tudhoe Village.

ANOTHER tournament and another bout of football depression.

Let’s hope that one day our youngsters can make dear old England smile again, as it’s been a while.

Hodgson Out.
