I READ the editorial comment Free speech under threat (Echo, June 20) with interest as it mirrored our experience at the Durham County Council meeting on June 18, when Weardale residents asked questions concerning the closure of Newtown House Residential Home, in Stanhope.
We had emailed and written to every councillor beforehand inviting them to express any concerns which they had at the meeting.
It was interesting that although cabinet provided statements purporting to answer our questions, not a single Labour councillor outside of the cabinet rose to ask a question, raise a concern or say anything about the matter.
Did they have any freedom to speak, or were they just there to vote?
I am very pleased that you are highlighting this dangerous development.
David Heatherington, Westgate-in-Weardale.
